The BIGMATH team at EURO 2021 for Operational Research and Management Science (OR/MS) in Europe

EURO 2021 is the largest and most important conference for Operational Research and Management Science (OR/MS) in Europe organized by EURO – the European Association of Operational Research Society and the Hellenic Operational Research Society (HELORS). The conference has been held at the University of West Attica (UNIWA) in Athens on 11-14 July 2021.

Four of the BIGMATH young researchers attended the event presenting the state-of-the-art in their Operations Research and outlining pathways of future developments under the stream Big Data and Optimization.

Greta Malaspina presented a numerical optimization approach for the solution of large scale Network Adjustment Problems that arise in localization problems such as GPS positioning, surveying andWireless Sensors Networks localization (title of the presentation: “A Modified Levenberg-Maquardt Method for Large Scale Network Adjustment”.

Giulia Ferrandi reviewed some methods for clustering graphs. A cluster is a group of nodes with the same properties, e.g., many intra-cluster edges and few extra-cluster edges, or vice versa (title of the presentation: “Optimization methods for graph clustering”).

Perfect Gidisu studied the problem of approximating data matrices in terms of a subset of actual columns and rows; a CUR decomposition (title of the presentation: “A Generalized CUR decomposition for matrix pairs”).

Stevo Rackovic presented a novel approach for learning the inverse rig parameters at increased accuracy and decreased computational cost at the same time (title of the presentation: “Clustering of the Blendshape Facial Model”.

Abstracts submitted at the event and presentations have been prepared with the support of the researcher’s tutors and supervisors such as Natasa Krejic (University of Novi Sad Faculty of Science), Michiel Hochstenbach (Eindhoven University of Technology) and Claudia Soares (Instituto Superior Tecnico, Universidade de Lisboa)
